After Dr. Jim Winnick completed his undergraduate degree at Cornell University and his doctorate degree at the State University of New York in Manhattan, he came to the west to complete his residency training in Portland, OR. He came down to California to work with an Ophthalmologist in Truckee, CA, but soon moved to the Bay area where he was a partner in large multi-doctor practice for 14 years.
Being horse people, he and his wife relocated to Oakdale, CA in 2013. He currently sees patients in a small private practice in Oakdale and started working with Brookside Optometric in November 2014.
He has always been involved with his profession beyond direct patient care. For many years, teaching was his primary focus. He is an Assistant Clinical Professor at the University Of California Berkeley School of Optometry. He taught in the Primary Care and Contact Lens Clinics and continues to be involved with the Practice Management course at the school. His teaching experience also involved designing and delivering contact lens curriculums to doctors in Russia and Poland. He served as a Board Member of the Alameda Contra Costa Optometric Society and moved through the chairs to become President. He was also selected as the California Optometric Association’s “Young Optometrist of the Year”. In more recent years, his efforts have shifted towards working within the vision insurance industry, primarily with Vision Service Plan (VSP). He has served as a professional doctor representative, lecturer and Board Member for VSP and continues to remain active with that company.
Although he’s been very active with optometric organizations, patient care is the reason he became an optometrist. Optometry allows him to spend more time with his patients than any other medical profession. He gets great pleasure from building long-term relationships with his patients and their families; literally watching children grow into adults. He loves to meet new patients and have them tell him that he’s helped them understand something or given them options they haven’t heard before. That builds long-term bonds that he enjoys, and he is constantly expanding his education and experiences to advance the care and services that he offers his patients.
Dr. Winnick and his wife, Pascale, are originally from the Northeast. He was born and raised in a small town in Upstate New York called Sidney. They met on Match.com in 2004. Believe it or not, they were living about two miles from each other in Livermore, CA and would have never met without the internet. In his “spare” time, Dr. Winnick and his wife enjoy the outdoors. They both pursue equestrian activities. They train off the track thoroughbreds for second careers. Pascale competes in Three Day Eventing and Jim enjoys Cowboy Mounted Shooting. They have two English Setters, Millie and Parker, who are avid bird hunters, and their Welsh Corgi, Dyson, is the “king of the ranch”. They also enjoy hunting, fishing and many forms of competitive shooting.
