A Professor, Doctor, Optometrist, and Mom, Dr. Yolanda Scheer joined us here at Brookside Optometric Group in September of 2014. A Northern California native, Dr. Scheer has served as an assistant clinical professor at UC Berkeley School of Optometry for the past 7 years, while the same time working as an associate doctor with an Optometric Group in Lafayette for the past 11 years.
Dr. Scheer and her husband, Bong Walsh, met while doing their undergraduate work at UC Santa Barbara and have been married 12 years. Dr. Walsh is an assistant professor at a private graduate school in Alameda where he teaches students studying to become clinical doctors in psychology. Together they are raising their six-year-old son Jet, who keeps them both busy and entertained.
Dr. Scheer counts working with children as one of the favorite aspects of her job. She says that "establishing lasting, trusting relationships while providing the highest quality vision care for families and the community is priceless". She feels strongly about performing early eye examinations for children. Many conditions are much easier to treat and can actually improve a child's vision when diagnosed at a young age. Many children who are struggling with learning challenges and attention issues at school actually have undiagnosed vision problems. Dr. Scheer has had the opportunity to treat many of these children - with remarkable outcomes - during her career.
When she's not at work or teaching, Dr. Scheer and her family enjoys spending time together playing games, pursuing outdoor activities such as softball, basketball, tennis and hiking, or watching Bay Area sports. The entire family are avid Giants, 49ers, and Warriors fans. They also enjoy weekend trips to the Wine Country and hanging out with friends enjoying backyard barbecues.
If you're lucky enough to be Dr. Scheer's patient, then you already know what a valuable asset she is to us here at Brookside Optometric Group. Stop by and say hello to her next time you're the office!
