Dr. Craig Hisaka was born and raised in Stockton. Graduating as one of the top students from Edison High School, he played basketball, was quarterback of the varsity football team and was named All-Conference in baseball.
After receiving his BA, BS and Doctorate of Optometry from the University of California, Berkeley, he continued on to earn a Master’s degree in Public Health. Dr. Hisaka’s public health education provided the cornerstone of the partnership concept he founded at Brookside Optometric Group. His philosophy has always been that “I practice what I teach, and teach what I practice….taking time with patients to learn about them as people, thus humanizing the practice of health care.”
Dr. Hisaka has taught at the University of California, Berkeley School of Optometry for over 35 years. He was awarded full Clinical Professorship, only the 6th part-time faculty member to receive this honor in the school’s history. The university cited his excellent clinical teaching, research, and academic teaching. His constant theme as a professor is “integrity with compassion!” Dr. Hisaka co-authored a textbook, Business Aspects of Optometry, which is required reading for optometry students nationally.
Dr. Hisaka was appointed by the governor and served on the California Medical Quality Review Board. He was married to the late Julie Karin Hisaka and has a daughter, Alex, who is the “center of his life.”
