Dr. John Fujii is an optometrist at Brookside Optometric Group. He enjoys working in a unique career that gives him the opportunity to build relationships with his patients while addressing their visual needs and making a positive impact on their overall health. The most rewarding aspect of his job is delivering personal and professional care to his patients while working alongside a great team of skilled doctors and staff.
Dr. Fujii has worked in three different ophthalmology offices and was formerly the Laser Center Director for Pacific Laser Eye Center. Working for ophthalmologists gave him greater experience with post-surgical care and complications, and his work at the laser center gave him the opportunity to work with, learn alongside, and train other optometrists and ophthalmologists.
His experience with one patient was especially significant. After finding a visual field defect in the patient’s peripheral vision that correlated with other symptoms, Dr. Fujii referred him to a neurologist. The neurologist did not believe anything was wrong with the patient. Dr. Fujii repeated the test again with the same results, and sent a follow up letter to the neurologist stating that the findings were indicative of a tumor. Despite the neurologist’s protests, the patient went in for further testing. After a radiologist saw his results, a neurosurgeon scheduled emergency surgery the very next day to remove the patient’s tumor. Dr. Fujii’s proactive testing and early detection led to a successful surgery which saved the patient’s life.
Born and raised in Stockton, Dr. Fujii graduated from Lincoln High School. After picking his college major on a dare from a friend, he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in biochemistry from the University of California, Davis. He continued his studies at the University of Houston College of Optometry, where he was fortunate to have great professors who enjoyed the profession and were community-minded. As a longtime sports fan, he also appreciated the opportunity to see a few major college basketball and football games.
Since returning to Stockton, Dr. Fujii has been incredibly active in the community. He served at First 5 San Joaquin for ten years as Chair, Vice Chair, and on numerous subcommittees. First 5 works to improve the lives of children and their families with programs such as early childhood education and parenting classes. As an officer of the San Joaquin Optometric Society, Dr. Fujii worked with his colleagues to fund and help build the Eye Exhibit at the Children’s Museum of Stockton. He continues to serve on the board of directors for the Buddhist Church of Stockton, and serves on the PTSA and School Site Council when time allows.
Dr. Fujii’s greatest hero and role model is his mother, who raised four young children on her own after his father passed away, and persevered to send all four of them to college. When Dr. Fujii is not at the office, you’ll find him spending time with his wife and two children. He enjoys watching his children’s musical performances and attending their sports practices and games. He has coached youth basketball teams at his church and the YMCA, and enjoys watching the Golden State Warriors, the San Francisco Giants, and the San Francisco 49ers.
