Elyse was nominated for this scholarship by her youth leader Hellen Summer. Her nomination submission explains more about this remarkable young lady:

I would like to nominate this young lady for her commitment to service. I met Elyse at a Youth Study Group that helps elementary students with homework help and tutoring. Elyse volunteered her time to help students between the ages of 6 to 12 with math, reading and grading homework. She has a passion for helping others and genuinely enjoys learning new things. As she would come to our program our staff would always say Ms. Summer, Elyse is a natural with the students. She is very engaging and patient. The students started to show more independence in their work assignments and their teamwork. Elyse posses these skillsets and it was evident that her engaging personality spilled over with the children in the program. I had time on my calendar to meet with Elyse to hear about her career goals. It was very interesting because not only does she aspire to become an OBGYN, and teach youth health education classes to help pay her way through college along with scholarships. Elyse shared that during the holidays that she volunteer time in her community at Saint Mary Dining hall during Thanksgiving and Christmas serving hot meals. Elyse was also selected for her leadership and academics to intern for the San Joaquin County District Attorney office for a summer and she really enjoyed it. During this time Elyse shared that she was able to hear court cases, debate on topics with other interns and also understand the legal system and many of the challenges that our community face and learning about the programs we offer to help keep our community safe. What I did not know is that, not only did Elyse volunteer hours to give back, that she was also working a part-time job at Walmart to help her save to pay for college. This is her last year and unfortunately, with the economic crisis our county is experiencing at this time, there is no guarantee that Elyse will be able to walk the stage with her class at Lincoln because the schools are shut down, and to fulfill some of the expenses for college she had a plan that at the time was solid, but this put her in a hardship. Elyse expressed how important it was for her to save up for college and wanted to focus more of her efforts to give back in the community through her volunteer work , helping others and educating on the gift of giving back to the community. Thank you.

Brookside Optometric Group is proud to offer this scholarship as a way to recognize the young people in our community who are setting the example for their generation. Congratulations Elyse!
