I am excited to try a newly released photochromatic lens. The SunSync Drive XT is a photochromatic lens that responds to ultraviolet light and also to visible light. The big advantage to responding to visible light is that it will get dark in the car while traditional photochromatic lenses will not. Thus to simplify, the brighter it is, the darker it will get.
SunSync Drive XT also claims to be the darkest outdoor color, offer the best clarity, and the fastest fade back time in it’s category. Most of us who have tried the photochromic lenses often complain that it isn’t dark enough outside, it doesn’t get dark in the car, or that it takes too long to change color. This new product release addresses those issues but it really depends on the “eyes of the beholder,” so to speak.
From an ocular health perspective, this lens offers 100% Ultraviolet (UV) light protection. UV light contributes to sunburn, the increased risk of skin cancer, cataracts, wrinkles, macular degeneration, and more. The lens also offers “targeted blue light filtration”, a relatively new area of concern—one of my biggest concerns is that we suspect blue light may impair the body’s production of Melatonin, a hormone that helps us sleep.
From an optical perspective, this lens claims to work great in the car, quickly activates, reduces glare, and claims to be very durable. The drawback is typically they will have some tint to it indoors. It also is currently backed by an exclusive one year 100% satisfaction guarantee. So if you don’t like the lens, we will send it back to the lab. I am ordering mine today and will let you know.
From a personal perspective, I do enjoy the photochromic lenses like the SunSync when going from outdoors to indoors and back but the regular SunSync never got dark enough for me while driving. The SunSync Drive XT seems to address that issue for me.
