Maintaining Healthy Eyes

Children's Exams at Brookside Optometric Group

A Crucial Time for Development

Childhood is an important time in the development of the eyes, and it’s vital that children are seen early and regularly. A child’s eyes continue to develop until around the age of 12. During these formative years, many problems that would otherwise result in lifelong vision deficiencies can be diagnosed and corrected.

Eye exams for children should begin before the age of 5, and kids should be seen yearly until at least the age of 18, as changes to the vision can occur rapidly during these years. Children who have a family history of vision problems should be seen at even earlier ages.

Your Child's Eye Exam may include:

Color Vision Testing

Does your child see all colors normally, or are specific colors harder to distinguish?

Testing Using Pictures

Very young children can’t read letters off a chart, but they know the difference between a dinosaur and a fish!

Objective Testing Techniques

Precision testing methods give us accurate, objective results without having to rely on reading ability or cooperation.

Checking for Eye Turn

Do your child’s eyes point straight ahead and provide the brain with an accurate image, or are muscular issues causing vision confusion?

Dilation-Free Exam

Our Optomap Retinal Scanner* produces a high-resolution 3D scan of the back of your eye, meaning no dilation for 90% of our patients.

No Eye Drops

We can check the internal pressures in your child’s eye without eye drops or puffs of air in most exams.

Visual Prescription Assessment

Has the overall visual prescription changed since your child’s last visit? Our doctors will provide an accurate correction level.

Near Vision Evaluation

How well can your child see up close for tasks like reading or computer usage?

Distance Vision Evaluation

Do your child's eyes coordinate properly for accurate distance vision?

Muscular Imbalance Evaluation

Are coordination or imbalance issues contributing to eye fatigue, double-vision, or headaches?

Retinal Health Assessment

Does our retinal evaluation show signs of eye disease or systemic conditions?

External Eye Health

Does the external surface of your child’s eye indicate problems like dry eye or more serious conditions?

Peripheral Vision Testing

Do changes in peripheral vision indicate early glaucoma, brain or pituitary tumors, or vascular aneurysms?

*The Optomap Retinal Scanner is an optional service provided to our patients at a small additional charge.

Eye Exams for Very Young, Non-Verbal, and Special Needs Patients

Very young children or those with special needs often require a special approach to their eye examination, but that doesn’t make their vision care any less important!

Our doctors at Brookside Optometric Group have a variety of specialized techniques for providing an accurate diagnosis even in patients who are unable to undertake a typical exam process. These techniques allow us to use external—and in most cases touch-free—testing methods to make the optometric examination as fun and stress-free as possible for your child, without requiring them to answer questions, peer into strange contraptions, or read from a chart.

Schedule an Appointment

To make setting up your next eye exam even easier, we’ve added online appointment requests! Once you submit your information our staff will confirm your appointment within 24 hours.
