The Dr. Craig Hisaka Practice and Business Management Memorial Fund
UC Berkeley, Herbert Wertheim School of Optometry & Vision Science
To honor the legacy of Brookside Optometric Group’s founder, Craig Hisaka, OD, MPH, FAAO, a named fund was created at the UC Berkeley School of Optometry to enhance students’ learning experience, especially in the business and management side of the optometric practice. The fund will support both a scholarship and efforts to promote and strengthen Practice and Business Management.
The Fund will support the following:
- Provide scholarships to students who participate in the Business Management Immersion Program(BMIP) and demonstrate exemplary leadership, vision, and passion in pursuing private business/practice ownership.
- Introduce students to aspects of practice management through increased exposure to diverse practices throughout California, acquainting them with the professional and business tasks of joining a practice.
- Expand partnerships between the UC Berkeley, School of Optometry and industry partners, such as VSP, to promote the growth of optometry practices across California.
- To give students and alumni of the UC Berkeley, School of Optometry access to practice and business management resources highlighting the successful models, operating processes, cutting-edge technology and industry innovations, which will drive the future of optometric practice.

Discovery Challenge Academy
Brookside Optometric Group provides free eye exams and glasses for the cadets at the Discovery Challenge Academy each year, supported by VSP Vision’s Eyes of Hope program. We are proud of all the cadets who put in the hard work to succeed in the academy and are honored to assist with their vision care needs.
Orange and Black Ball
We are a proud sponsor of the University of the Pacific’s Orange and Black Ball annually, which helps raise money for student athletics. It’s a great way for us to support student-athletes and this great university!
Scholarship Contest
Our annual College Scholarship contest for local San Joaquin County high school students has been a success since 2016. To be considered for the scholarship, outstanding local high-school seniors are nominated by a teacher, counselor, coach, or youth leader for their commitment to service, leadership, and character.
